Why Climate Change? Why me?
Youth across the country are taking the lead in their communities to combat climate change:

  • Locally, students at Analy High School in Sebastopol and students at Windsor High School in Windsor engaged their whole school to bike, walk and carpool more to school and reduce emissions causing climate change. Analy reduced single-passenger car trips by 21% in three weeks! Winsdor is now planning to reduce its emissions by 25% and Analy has set a goal of 30%.
  • Nationally, 587 colleges and high schools joined Campus Climate Challenge for a national week of action in January 2007 to raise awareness and promote solutions to climate change.
  • MTV has launched a Break the Addiction website to help young people reduce their daily impact, and they are producing shows like “Green Your Crib” for college dorm rooms.

This summer, we are launching Climate Quest on three college campuses across the country to give you - high school students - the skills, the information, and the voice to take action on climate change. You will learn about future college and career opportunities and learn how to make a difference in your schools and communities now. Climate Quest is open to high school students entering their Junior or Senior year.

Okay, I am concerned about climate change, but I still don’t know that much about it.
Don’t worry! In Climate Quest, you will learn from college professors who are experts in their field, college students already working on climate change solutions on their campuses, and from local policy-makers and business leaders. On top of that, you will learn how to use video-reporting to tell stories about how climate change affects your lives, your favorite places, and your community. Your completed videos will be shown at events locally throughout the Bay Area and published on national climate change websites.

Where and when will Climate Quest happen?
Sonoma State University is located in Rohnert Park in Sonoma County, California.
The dates are July 9 - 20, 2007.
Classes will be held from Monday to Friday from 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM daily.

How much college credit will I earn?
You will earn two units of college credit from Sonoma State University (SSU): one unit for the class on the science of climate change and one unit of field study credit for the filmmaking project. Most work will be completed during class time, but some evening reading and preparation will be required. You must check with your high school administration to find out how they recognize college credits from SSU.

I have never used a video camera.
You do not need to have any experience using video cameras or creating movies to take this class. If you do have video experience, your skills will be an asset and your professors will help you to further develop your skills.

I don’t have transportation to get to and from Sonoma State University everyday.
Please apply if you are interested in this program, even if do not have transportation! Carpooling is one of the best ways to reduce emissions causing climate change. We will help you to coordinate transportation to and from Sonoma State University.
