Leaflet for the Global Warming Reality Check

Leafleting Guidelines
Goal: To have fun, see the film, and inform curious or alarmed viewers of The Day After Tomorrow that they can get a reality check for the film by coming to the free Community Forum, Wednesday, June 9, 6:30 - 8:45 pm, Central Library, downtown Santa Rosa, 3rd and E Streets.

(The following is adopted from Rainforest Action Network Strategy— use as appropriate for you.)

1) Dowload the flyer and make copies.
2) Arrive at the theater about on hour before the film starts and purchase tickets.
3) For about 1/2 hour, leaflet OUTSIDE the theater on the sidewalk. You and your friends may want to make some signs to increase visibility. But be careful NOT TO GIVE AWAY TOO MANY FLYERS outside, since this is not our target audience—many people will be on their way to see other films.
4) Enter the theater and enjoy the film.
5) As soon as the film ends and the credits start to roll, position yourselves at the exits and start handing out your flyers. You may want to get a seat at the end of the aisles for easy access. This is the KEY CHANCE to hand out flyers, right after people have been shell shocked by the film. You may want to say something like, "Want some info on the facts about climate change? or "Want to learn how you can help stop climate change?" to get more people to take flyers.
6) After everyone has left the theater, head down to any after-movie hangouts you know of and hand out any flyers you have remaining.
7) Although unlikely that you will be noticed, theater staff may ask you to cease leafleting inside the theater. If this occurs, politely comply and finish leafleting outside.
8) Discuss the movie plot as little as possible with movie-goers; don't get drawn into a debate about science fiction. Instead bridge quickly back to the real world where global warming is happening, and put the movie in perspective without characterizing it one way or another. Quick and easy sound bites:

  • Solutions exist! Working together we can protect the climate.
  • Come to the free Community Forum and get a reality check - find out
what's true and what you can do.
  • The Day After Tomorrow is over the top. We're here to bring movie-goers
back to reality and give them ways they can act now to protect the climate.

9) Let us know how it goes - ann@skymetrics.us or (707) 829-1224.
