Community Climate Action Plan Update

The Community Climate Action Plan is the third step in a five-step program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions throughout all of Sonoma County. The program is being following by all nine Sonoma cities, the County and the Water Agency.

  • The first step, completed by the Climate Protection Campaign in 2005, was an inventory of Sonoma County’s greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Step two was to set a greenhouse gas emissions reduction target. In 2005, all nine cities in Sonoma and the County adopted the country’s boldest target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 25% below 1990 levels by 2015.
  • Step three is the Community Climate Action Plan, the blueprint to help Sonoma County achieve this emissions target.
  • Step four will be the implementation of actions in the Community Climate Action Plan.
  • Step five will be an on-going monitoring process to ensure we meet our reduction target.

Recent milestones toward developing Sonoma’s Community Climate Action Plan include:

  • Researching existing Climate Action Plans and interviewing authors of these plans to learn from the efforts of others
  • Selecting and convening a team of scientific, technical and economic consultants to work on “actions” that will be included in Sonoma’s plan
  • Selecting and convening a Steering Committee to guide the development of the Community Climate Action Plan
  • Convening local government representatives to present the Community Climate Action Plans goals, process and accomplishments to date, and get input and recommendations on development of the Plan

Upcoming milestones toward developing Sonoma’s Community Climate Action Plan will include:

  • On April 2, 2007, the Climate Protection Campaign will host the first in a series of Public Meetings to present the Community Climate Action Plans goals, process and accomplishments to date and to get input and recommendations from the public on development of the Plan. Please join the Climate Protection Campaign for this important public meeting about Sonoma County’s Community Climate Action Plan, the blueprint to help Sonoma County reduce greenhouse gas emissions 25% below 1990 levels by 2015.
