April 2 was a landmark day for the Climate Protection Campaign and Sonoma County as well over 200 people convened at the Finley Community Center to discuss development of our Community Climate Action Plan, the blueprint on how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 25% below 1990 levels by 2015. Among the crowd were representatives from several Sonoma city and county government agencies, including Santa Rosa's Mayor, Bob Blanchard who spoke about the importance of local efforts to address climate change. The evening's MC, Marcy Smothers also spoke about Sonoma's precedent setting efforts and introduced Climate Protection staff members who explained the Plan's process and goals.
The theme of the evening was the importance of public will to the success of the Community Climate Action Plan and attendees broke into small discussion groups to generate ideas on how to engage the community in this critical effort. Suggestions included education and networking to inform, align and mobilize Sonoma's residents to do something locally that is so inspiring that it becomes a model for other communities around the globe.
The level of expectation and hope in the room was as high as was awareness of the importance of this effort. One attendee summed it up this way, "How much does your children's and your grandchildren's health mean to you and what can we do to allow them to have a healthy planet and a healthy future?"
