GHG Inventory Project

The Greenhouse Gas Inventory Project was completed in November 2003, with all contract deliverables fulfilled. Greenhouse gas emission inventories for all Sonoma cities and the County were completed. Presentations about project results and implications were made to all nine City Councils, the Board of Supervisors, and the Board of the Sonoma County Waste Management Agency. The project cost slightly less than expected, and took five months longer than expected.

The project inspired many additional activities that went beyond the original scope of the project. Highlights of these enhancements include:

• A water and wastewater analysis that, according to one expert, will “transform the way we look at water, energy, GHG, and costs.”
• New web-based tools, for example, the online employee commute survey, that may help other municipalities, schools, businesses, etc. to calculate the GHG emissions from their commutes
• Identification of bold ideas that may help Sonoma County and others to dramatically reduce costs and GHG emissions
• Wider distribution of the project’s summary and supplements reports
• Better access, exposure, and presentation for the project through the Skymetrics website
• A Watergy Workshop, given on November 12, 2003, that drew electeds and staff from throughout the Bay Area to address reducing costs and GHG emissions through energy and water efficiency
• Continued funding and momentum for climate protection through a new contract with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.
