Sonoma County Status Report on Greenhouse Gas Emissions Released

David Roland-HolstAt the fifth annual Climate Protection Everybody Profits conference Ann Hancock, Director of the Climate Protection Campaign, delivered the annual status report of the County’s overall GHG emission performance as well as of emission trends for cities. Emissions in the County continue to rise. The data clearly demonstrate the need to implement solutions at speed and scale, like those offered in the Action Plan (www.coolplan.org), to meet our target and inspire other communities. Read the eight page report by linking here.

David Roland-Holst, a Professor of Economics at University of California at Berkeley and Hunter Lovins, the President of Natural Capitalism Solutions, also spoke at the conference and gave excellent presentations on making the economic case for climate protection. Their slides can be viewed at www.everybodyprofitssonoma.com.

Sonoma County Community Climate Action Plan

The Sonoma County Community Climate Action Plan was released in October 2008 and is available for downloading at www.coolplan.org.

This "Blueprint for the Future" is a package of solutions that will enable Sonoma County to achieve its greenhouse gas emission goal. The Plan was developed by 15 technical consultants, 50 community representatives, many ad hoc advisors, and staff from the Climate Protection Campaign. This Plan is considered by many to be among the most comprehensive of any local climate action plan.

Campaign Brings Attention to an Important Public Policy Issue

The Campaign along with our partners convened a forum at Santa Rosa City Council Chambers for the public to learn about the County of Sonoma's possible sale of the landfill on Meacham Road near Petaluma.

The County is considering selling the landfill to a private company. Several years ago the Regional Water Quality Control Board ordered the landfill closed after finding leachate in the aquifer. County deliberations are taking place in closed session because the County views divesture of the landfill as a real estate transaction. The Forum addressed current plans, future options, and their economic and environmental implications.

The forum was broadcast live on Comcast Channel 26 in Santa Rosa and rebroadcast on Comcast in Petaluma, Santa Rosa, and the North County.
